EMERGENCY!! Permobil C350 Difficulties -- PLEASE HELP!!!

Postby DariRyusei » 16 Jan 2011, 12:52

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to put this, and I'm sorry if I've broken any protocol I was supposed to follow, but this is an emergency and I need help IMMEDIATELY.

My partner has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. Has been his whole life. As you can imagine, when his powerchair goes out, it's a major, MAJOR event -- his "legs" no longer function. Unfortunately, that's just what happened. At three in the morning on a Sunday.

Unfortunately, our seating specialist is not going to be back until Monday morning. And because my partner has to depend on Medicaid, it'll probably be a month before we can even get anybody out here to look at the chair. And then another three or four months to receive any parts that we might need. So if we can fix this here at home, we'd really like to.

Here's what's going on. The chair turns on, all functions work -- the tilt, recline, and what have you, the speed can be adjusted, etc. But it won't move. When nothing's being pressed, the control panel flashes a "!", swearing there's a joystick error, and it gives me the code "0808".

Adding to the problem, we've only recently gotten this chair, and neither of us are used to it. Also, it appears to be missing the "line" of lights that are depicted in the manual. I have scoured the manual for the error code, and it does not seem to be in there. We'd fiddled with everything we can access to fiddle with, and nothing seems to be working.

I'm begging -- anybody who can help, please tell us some way to fix it. We can't afford for this chair to go out; Medicaid won't pay for him a new one for six more years, and he doesn't have his old chair anymore. Please, someone help us!

Joystick error usually means just that. New joystick needed. But its not always so simple. What chair are we talking about here? What control system?

P&G lists 0808 as:
""
Trip Code : 0808

VSI - Controller Trip

Check condition of batteries, motor(s) and connections.

If the trip persists then the controller may be defective and should be returned to PG Drives Technology.

Replacement used controller cheap on ebay may be the easiest solution once the obvious things are checked?

Hi, I remember when something like this happened to my Permobil Lowrider I did something to reset it (can't remember exactly what I did) but I think it had something to do with the freewheel lever or a fuse located nearby to it. Sorry I can't be of any more help than that!

Well obviously try all the obvious fixes first. The freewheel lever, the various inhibit switches, battery connections, any loose or damaged connectors or a brake disconnected etc. After that its ebay...

Definitely check the batteries, make sure they're charged and all the wires are well connected. Also have a look for any cables that have been pinched in the power seating, or come unplugged.

It's a Permobil C350, I don't know what control system. It's a new chair and I know nothing about it. The manual says something about a line of lights at the top of the controller, and this one doesn't have that.

In the end, though, all the wires and connections are covered by something, and I'm afraid to take it apart. I'm afraid to take things off, because I'm afraid I'll mess something up. I...don't know that there's any such lever or fuse where I can get to it. If by "freewheel lever", you mean the thing that makes it able to be pushed, It's a little tab that's pulled, and it's completely covered by the casing, and I can't get to it. It pulls out and pushes in like it's supposed to. And when it's out it can be pushed, when it's in it can't be.

As for checking wires, like I mentioned above, everything's covered up, and I can't access it without taking the chair completely apart. And I'm afraid if I do that, that I'll never get it back together again. I've checked everything that I can. The weird thing is, everything's working perfectly fine. Tilt and recline can be adjusted, and the position of the chair does move when these things are engaged. The chair turns on and off normally. The "horn" works. Every little bell is shined and every whistle sounds clearly.

It just...won't go. So I'm confused. I'm going to try plugging it into the charger and seeing if it's a low battery. I seriously doubt it, because we plug it in every single night, and my partner doesn't go out and use a lot of battery power. But at least I can point the tech in the right direction. :)

A check of all the connections has to be done - there's no way to get away from it. You might start by downloading the service manual at
http://www.permobil.com/documentation/U ... S_C350.pdf

You'll find, for example, that the entire shroud is held on by two knobs and some velcro, so it really isn't hard to get things opened enough to check that all cables are fully plugged in. Of course, check that the cable on the joystick itself is plugged in all the way too. If you feel that you can't do this kind of checking, I'm afraid you will have to wait for the dealer.

Ciao,

If you can follow the instructions to get the shroud off, my first check would be to see that all the motor leads are firmly plugged in!

Try unplugging the main cord for the joystick for a few seconds then replugging it in. That should reset the error code. It's located at the back of the joystick and it easy to pop out.

I need some help. I live in Modesto, California. I'm disabled and just bought a used Permobil c350 with the R-NET control system on Craigslist. It's been working fine until the last 48 hours. All of a sudden, it locked up on me in the middle of the street and was stuck in flashing turtle/Joystick off-center and will not move or reset. This is an emergency. How can I fix it and get it moving again?

Check all joysticks ARE centralised, no shopping bags or straps holding say a rear remote joystick off centre. Check, all connectors, and ither than that theres little you can do. Next step, plug in replacement joystick module and test.

Sounds like a drive inhibit-chair thinks it is in freewheel, or it thinks the seat is in an unsafe position to allow driving.
On C350, the freewheel switch is mounted to the left motor brake.
Chair systems are so complex, it is difficult to really do more than guess, at this point, without competent trained eyes looking at it.
